The Birth of Baléport
What is now the Merchant Republic of Baléport began as a modest trading post, originally part of the larger, more religiously driven House of Dawn. However, as its merchants grew in wealth and influence, the city's importance soon overshadowed the purpose of the House of Dawn. Over centuries of economic expansion, Baléport became so rich and powerful that The house of Dawn could no longer afford to manage it. Eventually, the city-state required its own governance system, laying the foundation for what is now one of the world's most influential and fiercely independent city-states.
While small in territorial size compared to its larger neighbors, Baléport’s wealth has allowed it to maintain a powerful and dynamic presence in regional politics, making it a key player in the balance of power. Its influence stretches far beyond its city walls, with its reach extending through the power of trade and wealth, both of which are tightly interwoven.
Society and Government
Baléport's society is defined by one thing above all else—commerce. Every aspect of daily life is centered around the pursuit of wealth, from the grand trading houses to the smallest street vendors. The Republic’s government is composed of elected officials known as Merchants of the Council, who are chosen by the wealthiest and most influential families in Baléport. These council members oversee the city’s political and economic decisions, ensuring that trade flows freely and that Baléport maintains its status as the wealthiest city in the known world.
While the Merchant Republic is technically a republic, it operates on a system that closely resembles a meritocracy, where political power is heavily influenced by wealth. The wealthier the merchant or family, the more influence they wield in the government. Public offices are often filled by those who can afford the exorbitant costs of the elections, which are determined by trade successes, business acumen, and often, sheer monetary power. While Baléport does have its own standing forces, it is rather small, as paying for soldiers to stand on walls becomes expensive, and soldiers can inevitably be bought in time of need.

The city-state’s currency is universally accepted across the known world, and its financial markets are the place to be for those looking to make or lose their fortunes.

The Festival of the Golden Coin is the most celebrated, where the people of Baleport come together to honor their greatest god: wealth.
